Congratulations, Class of 2020!

This national emergency, caused by the COVID-19 virus, has affected our country dramatically. For the safety of all Americans, quarantines have been mandated by our local and federal governments.

The president, vice president, deans and faculty and administrators here at Temple congratulate all their graduates on achieving their degrees that they have deservedly earned. We acknowledge your hard work and dedication to complete all the required academic and clinical obligations to receive your Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. We congratulate you all and wish you continued success in your postgraduate residencies. Remember you are Temple Made. Temple Tough. And be Temple Proud.

I bid you good morning and I thank you for joining us on this most important day. Today marks the 54th Commencement of the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. Today, our honored guests welcome each of you. It is important to the school and to our profession, your invitation to celebrate with us is a demonstration of the esteem in which our students hold you. In the same way, your attendance this afternoon is a sign of your respect for these wonderful graduates.

To our faculty, thank you. I repeat this each year because I feel that is so important. Yours is a noble and selfless profession. You have spent four years giving of yourselves. Each day you have imparted your experience, your intelligence and your patience to these graduates. You have given this graduating class what every generation since the beginning of time has sought: You have imbued them with the ability to heal.

This Class of 2020 contains 88 students, almost evenly divided between men and women. You have graduated from 80 different colleges in 24 states. You have come from three foreign countries and you represent every ethnic group. You represent the future of healthcare. I charge you to join the American Podiatric Medical Association and its state components wherever you are. Those two associations will deliver your message to representatives in Washington and in your state to protect our profession.

Today your status as a student ends and your life as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine begins. Today your name will be entered on our rolls as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. You join over 14,000 podiatrists who treat millions of patients in every state in this nation. Today your professional life begins. We challenge you to not fall into the comfortable routine of a practicing podiatrist. We challenge you to become a leader in this profession, as so many of your predecessors have become. Today we challenge each and every one of you to become that type of leader, that type of doctor. Your activity, your involvement and your energy will shape the course of this profession. However, this will only happen if you decide today to become a leader. This resolve will not only help you, but is necessary to our success.

Today you enter into a profession, which offers you unlimited horizons. These will be the horizons that you shape. They are being defined by your generation, not ours. Abraham Lincoln once said, “Many things come to those who wait but they are only the things left over or left behind by those who hustle.” Today we challenge you to continue the spirit and the hustle that brought you to this great school.

We, here, have given you everything we can. From today forward, your youth, your energy and your dedication will change and shape your own world. The fight that will define that world is taking place right now. That terrible urgency of now faces you and your future today. Today, embrace the challenge and carry with you the spirit and skills with which this school has equipped you to become a great Doctor of Podiatric Medicine and, just as importantly, to become a great and involved citizen.

The School of Podiatric Medicine, founded in 1963, is the largest podiatric medical treatment facility in the world. The school prepares students with the most innovative procedures and advanced technology. Our faculty works to increase the body of knowledge of the lower extremity through research, scholarly publication and presentation. Graduates are ethically trained to advance the podiatric medical profession through community service, research and quality patient care.
